How long does the AI Governance Status Assessment take?
A standard assessment typically takes two to four weeks from initial data collection to final recommendations. Larger organisations with multiple business units may require more time for comprehensive cross-departmental mapping.
What if we have not implemented any AI tools yet?
The assessment is arguably more valuable for organisations at the start of their AI journey. We focus on identifying optimal starting points and building the right governance foundation before adoption begins. Governing AI before it is widely adopted is much easier than retrofitting governance after the fact.
Is our data secure during the assessment?
Yes. The assessment runs on the BoardEvaluator™ platform, hosted on AWS and designed to POPIA and GDPR-aligned standards, under strict confidentiality with NDAs available. Our methodology focuses on patterns, practices and governance posture, not on extracting operational or financial detail.
Does the board need to be involved, or is this an IT exercise?
It is emphatically not an IT exercise. King V Principle 10 places responsibility for the governance of technology and information at board level, not with the CTO. The board needs to understand the framework, approve the policies and exercise ongoing oversight. The IT function executes; the board governs.
How does AI governance connect to our POPIA obligations?
Closely. Many AI tools process personal information, triggering POPIA obligations around lawful processing, purpose limitation, minimisation and security. We address the data-governance layer of AI adoption as an integrated part of the programme, connecting directly to the POPIA Compliance Assessment and the Academy's data-privacy training.
